- The activity of painting relatively small paintings, originally using an easel or other device in the process. The term is used to refer to the process used by artists in the west, dating from the 16th century and later, when art was considered valuable in its own right, and to distinguish paintings on panel and canvas from mural paintings, manuscript illuminations, or decorative painting on objects.
